Cooking for Four

I grew up in a large Jamaican family with backyard cookouts and celebrations centered about food. Celebrations would undoubtedly result in a feast — a vast array of the most delicious West Indian foods, flavors so drenched in spices and love — it saturates my memories even today.

When I got married (it’s hard to believe it’s been 17 years), I was eager to match those feast filled flavors for my husband (affectionately known as the fox). He had visited with my family several times while we courted and I wanted to create the same flavors.

I soon realized that I couldn’t easily match the flavors (exactly) like the matriarchs in my family. As a new wife, placing ridiculous pressure of perfection on myself, in more ways that creating flavors, it took years for me to embrace my own flavors. I could not have asked for a sweeter partner by my side through my personal growth as a wife. He has swallowed and smiled through unpleasant flavors, laughed with me through complete and utter fails and embraced me just as I am.

Fast forward 17 years, and I’ve gone from cooking for two, to cooking for three to now cooking for four. With each addition to my family, with my culture at the heart of my love for cooking, my flavor has become more…me…the perfection combination of my fox, a sprinkle of my sunshine (my son) and sunflower (my daughter).

Here’s to embracing our flavors!

Graciously, Kay
